What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is effective in treating most musculoskeletal pain, Acupuncture is used to treat most musculoskeletal pain, neurological and myofascial pain, headache, arthritis, and post-operative pain. In addition, acupuncture is effective in treating many internal disorders, including gynecological, gastrointestinal, respiratory, fatigue, asthma, and menopausal symptoms.

Acupuncture can also be a useful adjunct to a comprehensive management program, such as stroke rehabilitation or integrative cancer care.

What is the role of Chinese herbal medicine?

An herbal formula is a therapeutic supplement intended to restore a functional equilibrium within the individual according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Depending on the condition being treated, herbs may be a useful adjunct to acupuncture or may be best used alone.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit will include a detailed verbal intake and a physical exam, followed by a treatment plan. Treatment can include any of the modalities we offer: acupuncture, herbal medicine, Qigong, Tuina, etc.  For acupuncture, it is best to wear loose-fitting clothing so the practitioner can have access to points from your elbows and knees down to your hands and feet. Loaner scrubs are also available for this purpose.

How are herbal formulas taken?

Traditionally, raw herbs are boiled in a decoction with water and drunk as a tea. Herbs are also processed into tablets, ground into powder, extracted in alcohol, or refined into powder extracts. At the Acupuncture and Qigong Health Center, all formats are available. However, powder extracts are currently the most popular, and therefore the easiest to obtain from wholesalers. What is most effective depends on your needs and lifestyle.
