Complete Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine is holistic. It relies on an understanding of both the interconnectedness within and throughout the body and the interconnectedness between mind and body. Most people in the West think of Chinese medicine as just acupuncture. However, this holistic model includes various modalities, of which acupuncture is merely the most common. The entirety of Chinese medicine, Complete Chinese Medicine, includes

  • Herbal medicine
  • Mind/body/breath exercises like Qigong and Dao Yin
  • Moxibustion, or applying warmth to acupuncture points
  • Acupressure
  • Cupping
  • Dry needling
  • Various forms of body manipulation and massage.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a broad title that refers to various medical practices developed in ancient China and continually evolving today. These practices include a variety of medicinal techniques, most prominently acupuncture and herbal medicine.

  • Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin needles into the body at specific locations called acupuncture points. The human body has over 2,000 acupuncture points, linked by meridians (pathways) that facilitate qi (life force, pronounced chee). These points are connected to the fascial tissue and the central nervous system, improving the flow of qi throughout the body. A skilled acupuncturist knows how to find, combine, and stimulate these points for maximum efficacy. In lieu of needles, they may also apply focused heat (moxabustion) or manual pressure (acupressure).
  • Chinese herbal medicine is 3,000 years in the making. For generations, scholars and physicians have established and archived the medicinal properties of several thousand individual herbs. Herbs are combined into formulas and prescribed on an individual basis according to the principles of acupuncture. Our herbs, supplied by Crane Herb Company and Spring Wind Herbal Products, are certified pure by independent laboratories.
  • Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a meditative health practice that combines body movement, breathing, and visualization. Learn more about Qigong, and sign up for classes, at www.daoisnow.org .
  • Tuina Massage is a form of Chinese massage based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, it focuses on the structural alignment of the muscles and bones of the body. Tuina can be done as part of an acupuncture treatment or as a stand alone therapy.
